Effects of Appreciation Program for Alcoholics’ Families

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to design and investigate the effectiveness of an appreciation program for family members of alcoholics. The appreciation program was constructed based on Adler and Fagley’s eight aspects of appreciation (2005): ‘Have focus’, ‘Awe’, ‘Ritual’, ‘Present Moment’, ‘Self/Social comparison’, ‘Gratitude’, ‘Loss/Adversity’ & ‘Interpersonal.’ Subjects included 16 individuals who are currently participating in Al-anon program in either Seoul or the Kyeonggi province. Participants were categorized into two groups of eight: the experimental group and the control group. When compared to the control group, participants of the appreciation program reported significantly higher scores on both the appreciation and self-esteem scales and lower scores on the depression scale. Implications and limitations of the study are discussed.
